Rinse the bowl and tray daily, take the fountain fully apart and wash it once a week, replace the filter every three to four weeks, and replace the water conduit and impeller every three months. That routine covers almost everything that goes wrong with a pet fountain.
How Often Should You Clean a Cat Water Fountain?
| Task | How often | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rinse and top up | Daily | Removes loose debris before it settles |
| Full clean | Weekly | Clears the water path, tray and tank |
| Replace filter | Every 3–4 weeks | Maintains filtration; the filter light turns solid orange when due |
| Replace conduit and impeller | Every 3 months | Maintains steady water flow |
Before You Start
Pump vs. pumpless
A conventional pump fountain has a submerged pump to dismantle. A pumpless Elfin fountain uses a water conduit and magnetically driven impeller, while its base stays outside the water path. Either way, power the unit down before you clean.
What is safe to use?
Use warm water, a soft brush or cloth, and mild unscented soap where needed. Avoid abrasives, metal tools and strong fragrances, then rinse thoroughly.
What is dishwasher-safe?
Check your model manual. For the Elfin E1+, only the stainless-steel water tray is dishwasher-safe; hand-wash the other removable parts. Most E1 Lite and E1S removable parts are dishwasher-safe except their impellers and water conduits. The base is never dishwasher-safe or submersible.
How to Clean a Cat Water Fountain: Step by Step
- Power down and empty the fountain. Disconnect power before removing the tank or tray.
- Take it apart. Remove the spout, water tray, filter tray, filter, water conduit and impeller in that order.
- Wash the tank, tray and spout. Rinse daily; at the weekly clean, wash all removable pieces with warm water and mild soap, then rinse well.
- Clean the water path. Rinse through the conduit with a soft brush. Remove hair from the impeller and make sure it spins freely.
- Clean the base safely. Wipe the base only with a soft, slightly damp sponge. Keep the power port dry and never wash or submerge the base.
- Check the filter. Rinse a filter gently to remove surface debris, but replace it every three to four weeks. A new filter should soak for five minutes and rinse for one minute before fitting.
- Reassemble and refill. Fit the impeller, conduit, filter tray, filter, water tray and spout. Fill with cool water, no warmer than 40 °C (104 °F), between the MIN and MAX marks.
The Daily 60-Second Routine
Pour out any remaining water, rinse the tray and visible surfaces, check the water level, and refill with fresh water. It takes less than a minute and makes the weekly clean much easier.
Slime, Scale and Odour: What They Mean
- Slime: clean more often and rinse all removable parts thoroughly.
- White scale: mineral deposits from hard water; wipe gently and clean on schedule.
- Odour or cloudy water: empty the fountain, do a full clean and replace the filter if it is due.
When Cleaning Is Not the Problem
If flow is still weak after you clean the conduit and impeller and fit a fresh filter, the water conduit and impeller may be due for replacement. If the impeller will not turn, the fountain keeps beeping, or water reaches the base, stop using it and see our pet fountain troubleshooting guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put my cat fountain in the dishwasher?
Only if your model manual explicitly says that part is dishwasher-safe. The base must never go in a dishwasher.
How often should I replace the filter?
Every three to four weeks. Read our cat water fountain filter replacement guide for the indicator-light and compatibility details.
Why is the flow weak after cleaning?
Check for hair around the impeller, make sure the conduit is fully seated, and replace the conduit and impeller if they are due.
