The Short Answer
Replace the filter every three to four weeks. On a Cheerble Elfin fountain, the filter indicator light turns solid orange when it is due.
That is the manufacturer’s stated interval. Everything below explains when to replace sooner and which filter actually fits your fountain.
How to Read the Filter Indicator Light
Elfin fountains track filter life so you do not have to remember dates.
| Indicator state | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Filter light off | Filter within service life | Nothing |
| Filter light solid orange | Replacement reminder | Fit a new filter |
| Filter light flashing orange | Timer reset succeeded | Nothing — this confirms the reset |
After fitting a new filter, reset the timer manually. With the device on, press and hold the filter timer reset button for five seconds. The filter indicator flashes orange to confirm. If you skip this, the reminder keeps showing for a filter you already changed. Indicator behaviour varies between models, so check your manual if yours does not match this table.
What Changes the Replacement Interval
Three to four weeks is the baseline. More than one pet drinking from it, long hair or heavy shedding, hard water, infrequent cleaning and warm rooms all push the interval toward three weeks. Topping up the tank does not extend the filter life: debris stays in the system.
Which Filter Fits Your Fountain
The Elfin range does not use one universal filter, so check the model before ordering.
| Fountain model | Filter |
|---|---|
| Elfin E1 | Standard Pet Fountain Replacement Filters |
| Elfin E1+ | Standard Pet Fountain Replacement Filters |
| Elfin D1 Pro | Standard Pet Fountain Replacement Filters |
| Elfin E1 Lite | Model-specific filter |
| Elfin E1S | Model-specific filter |
The E1 Lite and E1S use their own filter designs. If you are unsure, check the model number on the base against your manual before ordering, or contact Cheerble support with the model number ready. An 8-pack covers roughly six to eight months for a single fountain at the stated interval.
The Filter Is Not the Only Consumable
| Part | Replace every | Symptom when overdue |
|---|---|---|
| Filter | 3–4 weeks | Visible debris, odour, cloudy water |
| Water conduit and impeller | 3 months | Flow weakens or becomes intermittent |
If you have fitted a fresh filter and flow is still weak, the filter was not the problem. Rinse the conduit and impeller during the weekly clean, but replace the kit on schedule.
Signs to Check the Filter Sooner
- Visible debris trapped on the filter surface, or fur on the tray
- An odour from the water or tray
- Cloudy or discoloured water within a day of refilling
- Slower flow that returns after a filter change
Your cat drinking less is not a reliable filter diagnosis. If the change is noticeable, speak to your vet.
Can You Rinse and Reuse a Filter?
A gentle rinse clears surface debris and is useful during the weekly clean. It does not reset the filter: the layers that trap fine particles and adsorb dissolved substances load up progressively. Rinse to keep flow steady between changes, not to stretch the interval.
How to Replace the Filter
- Power the fountain down and disconnect it.
- Remove the spout and water tray, then lift out the old filter and tray.
- Soak the new filter for five minutes, then rinse it for one minute.
- Rinse the filter tray and remove fur from its edges.
- Refit the tray, filter, water tray and spout; secure the latches.
- Refill with cool water, no warmer than 40 °C (104 °F), without going above MAX.
- Reset the timer by holding the reset button for five seconds until the indicator flashes orange.
A filter change is a good time to do the weekly deep clean because the fountain is already apart.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I change my cat water fountain filter?
Every three to four weeks. On a Cheerble Elfin fountain, the filter indicator turns solid orange when due.
What happens if I do not change the filter?
Debris accumulates, water quality declines and flow may weaken. It does not damage the fountain, but it defeats the point of having a filter.
Do Cheerble fountains all use the same filter?
No. E1, E1+ and D1 Pro share the standard replacement filter. E1 Lite and E1S take model-specific filters.
I changed the filter but the light is still orange. Why?
Reset the timer: with the device switched on, hold the filter timer reset button for five seconds until the indicator flashes orange.
I changed the filter but the flow is still weak. What now?
Check the water conduit and impeller; they have a separate three-month replacement interval.
