Pet Water Fountain Troubleshooting: No Flow, Noise, Leaks and Lights

Most pet fountains that stop working are fixable in a few minutes. The water is low, the filter is loaded, hair is caught in the water path, or a part went back in wrong after the last clean. Those four checks resolve most cases.

A smaller number come down to a hardware fault, where further cleaning will not change the outcome. Those are covered by warranty. This guide helps you recognise that point so you are not repeating the same clean before getting help.

Start Here: The 60-Second Check

  1. Power: make sure the fountain is switched on and receiving power. On an Elfin fountain, hold the function button for three seconds to power on. On a battery model, press it once to display battery status.
  2. Water level: confirm water is above MIN. Below MIN, the fountain cannot dispense correctly.
  3. Assembly: confirm every part is seated and the latches are closed. From the bottom up: impeller, water conduit, filter tray, filter, water tray, spout.
  4. Seating on the base: check that the tank is properly attached. With plug-in power, connect power before attaching the tank.

If the fountain runs after these checks, you are done.

How to Tell a Cleaning Problem from a Hardware Fault

What you are seeing What to do
Flow is weak, slow or intermittent Clean the conduit and impeller; replace the filter if due
Flow stopped after a clean and refill Recheck the assembly
The fountain sounds louder than it used to Refill to mid-tank, then refit the water tray and spout
Filter light stays orange after a change Hold the filter reset button for five seconds
Fountain runs in short bursts Normal in Smart and Timer modes
Impeller spins but little water reaches the tray Fit a new replacement kit
Impeller tries to start and stops, or will not turn Contact support — covered by warranty
Whining or grinding remains after a full clean and new kit Contact support — covered by warranty
No lights or sound with a known-good cable and outlet Contact support — covered by warranty

Cleaning fixes restrictions, not drive failures. If the drive is trying to turn and cannot complete a rotation, go straight to support.

The Fountain Has No Flow or Weak Flow

Work through these in order and stop once one resolves it.

Check the impeller and water conduit

Power down, remove both parts, and look for hair around the impeller. A single long strand can noticeably slow flow. Check that it spins freely and rinse the conduit with a soft brush — nothing stiff or metal. If the impeller is worn or cleaning does not restore flow, fit a new replacement kit. The conduit and impeller are consumables with a three-month replacement interval.

Check the filter

A filter loaded with fur and debris restricts flow. Replace it if it is near or past the three-to-four-week interval. Soak a new filter for five minutes and rinse it for one minute before installing.

Check the water-level probe and level

If water is above MIN but the fountain behaves as though it is empty, wipe the probe gently with a damp cloth. Refill between MIN and MAX, and do not use water warmer than 40 °C (104 °F).

If you have cleaned the path, fitted a new filter, checked the probe and refilled correctly but flow is still wrong, you have exhausted the user-serviceable causes. Contact support.

It Stopped Working Right After Cleaning

This is almost always a reassembly issue rather than a failure. Confirm that the impeller sits in the water-tank groove, the conduit is pushed fully onto the impeller, the filter tray, filter, water tray and spout are in that order, and all latches are closed. Dry the base contact surface and underside of the tank before seating it. If the impeller will not turn freely after refitting, or turns once and then locks, contact support.

The Fountain Is Noisy

A pumpless fountain running normally is quiet; the Elfin E1 Lite is specified at 23 dB. Refill if water is low, refit the tray and spout, clean debris from the conduit and impeller, and place the fountain on a hard, flat, stable surface. A whining, grinding, whirring or high-pitched sound that remains after a full clean, correct reassembly and a new kit is a hardware fault. Contact support rather than dismantling it again.

The Fountain Beeps

A beep during a failed start-up is a status signal, not a setting you can change. If the impeller attempts to turn and stops, confirm once that water is above MIN and the impeller is seated, then contact support.

The Fountain Will Not Charge

On a battery model, try a different cable, adapter and outlet; use the supplied USB Type-C cable and adapter where possible. Confirm the power port is clean and fully dry. If the battery indicator flashes orange while plugged in, or the fountain will not hold a charge overnight with known-good power, contact support.

The Fountain Is Leaking

  • Overfilling: empty to below MAX.
  • Parts not latched: check every latch, the spout and water tray.
  • Splash, not leak: check spout alignment and whether a pet is disturbing the flow.
  • Cracked part: inspect the tank and tray for hairline cracks.

If water is reaching the base, disconnect power immediately. Dry the base and power port completely; never wash or submerge the base. If water entered it, contact support.

What the Indicator Lights Mean

The Elfin E1+ has four separate indicator lights. Other models have fewer, so check your manual if yours differs.

Light State Meaning Action
Battery Low / charging / fully charged Battery status Connect power if low
Mode Smart / Timer Active mode Short-press to check or switch
Warning Solid orange Device error Check assembly and water; if still on, contact support
Filter Solid orange Replacement due Fit a new filter and hold reset for five seconds
Filter Flashing orange Timer reset succeeded Nothing

In Smart Mode, the E1+ dispenses for 20 seconds when it detects a pet nearby. In Timer Mode, it dispenses for 20 seconds every 15 minutes. Neither is designed to run continuously.

The Fountain Works but My Cat Will Not Use It

This is not a hardware fault. Place it away from the litter box, food bowl and busy walkways; leave the previous bowl alongside it for the first two weeks; rinse away any detergent residue; and consider whether the sound is disturbing your cat. Noticeable changes in drinking can also be medical, so speak to your vet where appropriate.

When to Contact Support, and What to Send

Contact support if the impeller repeatedly starts and stops, will not turn, noise survives a full clean and new kit, the warning light stays orange after assembly and water checks, the fountain will not charge with known-good power, water reached the base, or a part is cracked. Cheerble hardware has a one-year limited warranty from original retail purchase.

Include your order number and purchase date, model name, a short video showing the behaviour, and what you have already tried. Do not attempt to open the base: there are no user-serviceable parts inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my cat water fountain not flowing?

Most often water is below MIN, the filter is overdue, or hair is wrapped around the impeller. Check those first. If the impeller tries to turn and stops, contact support.

Why does my pet fountain beep and then stop?

It indicates the drive could not complete a rotation. Confirm the water level and impeller seating once, then contact support.

What does a solid orange light mean?

A solid orange filter indicator means the filter is due. A solid orange warning indicator means a device error: check assembly and water level, then contact support if it remains.
